The Caps 12th, Ovechkin’s 500th

The Rangers scored four power play goals, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Caps from earning their 12th straight win in a night where Alex Ovechkin scored the 500th point of his career.

The Caps are due for a letdown and I though Thursday night was the night.  The Rangers dominated the first period and scored on their first three power plays of the game after going 0 for their previous 25 chances en route to a 5-goal outburst, but playing fire-wagon hockey with the highest scoring team in the league is bound to get you burned.

Jose Theodore kept the Caps in the game early and the first line of Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble did the rest.  The trio combined for a 10 point night that was topped off by a one-handed goal from Ovechkin, which can be viewed below.

The Caps have outscored opponents 25-5 in the third period during their winning streak and Thursday was no different as they took the lead and put the Rangers away early in the third.

Larry Bishop, 22, is a Rangers fan and says while it would have been nice to get two points and put an end to the Caps winning streak, he is optimistic after watching the Caps skate to victory.

“This is the Rangers we’re talking about here.  Five goals and none of them from a guy named Gaborik, that’ll give any Rangers fan a reason for hope.  It’s nice to score without the big guns having to do all the work.”

The Caps look to push the streak to 13 when they face a Kovalchuk-less Thrashers team in the District on Friday night.
